The Historic market town of
Marlborough lies in the valley of the River Kennet
on the southern edge of the Marlborough Downs.
The town straddles the former stagecoach Route from
London to Bath and Bristol. The broad High Street
lined with Georgian Buildings is one of the finest
in England and is located between the two historic
churches of St Peter's and St Mary's. A feature
of the High Street is the Georgian Colonnaded shops
behind which are back alleys just waiting to be
explored.
At the western end of the High Street stands Marlborough
College the famous public school, which was founded
in 1843. William the Conqueror built a castle in
Marlborough shortly after the Norman invasion and
a number of early English monarchs are known to
have stayed in the castle and hunted in the near
by Savernake Forest.
Marlborough offers a superb base for exploring the
historic and beautiful countryside of central southern
England and is an ideal starting point for walks
and cycle rides. The World Heritage site of Avebury
is only seven miles away. Within one hours travel
by car is Stonehenge, Bath, Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon.
London can be reached in just over an hour. |
